Building assets in children is not a project or program. It is a journey that should take place during the developmental years (ages 0-20) of all children.

Transformational Interventions with High-Risk Youth: A Full Day Training with Dr. Scott Larson

 October 3, 2008

8:00am-4:30pm

Allen County Public Library, Meeting Rooms B/C

900 Library Plaza

Fort Wayne, IN 46802

Designed for probation officers, youth care workers, youth pastors, and others working with youth involved in the juvenile justice system, this all day training will address the following:

Transformational change principles.
Rehabilitation means "restoring to a former state." Transformation is defined as "becoming what one has never been." This session, rooted in organizational change literature, presents several transformational change principles for working with troubled teens.

"Basic training" for success in connecting with challenging youth.
Children and youth need supportive persons who respond to their needs rather than react to their problems. This training teaches connecting skills grounded in the latest research evidence on resilience, brain science, and positive youth development.

Resolving conflict creatively with high-risk youth.
Troubled teens have a way of drawing adults into their own conflict cycles. When this happens, the problem is escalated, leaving the youth feeling all the more convinced that the adult is no different than all the others who have let them down. This component explains the conflict cycle, how to keep from entering it, and how to provide kids what they really need for lasting change.

Application of resilience science to meet the growth needs of all young persons.
Children need opportunities to develop belonging, mastery, independence, and generosity. This module translates the latest research into practical methods for building strengths in all youth through a 3-stage process of connecting, clarifying and restoring.

Strength-based discipline with troubling behavior.
How does one build on the strengths of youth while at the same time addressing destructive behavior patterns? This training counters current punitive approaches that lock adults in conflict with young people, and presents several best practice scripts and tools for turning problems into opportunities. Instead of confronting young persons with reactive, coercive interactions, adults are taught to present the youths with high expectations of taking responsibility and showing respect for self and others, thus enlisting them as agents in positive change.
