Barb Burdge, PhD, MSW

Barb J. Burdge is a professor of social work at Manchester University. Barb directs the Social Work Program at MU,  chairs the Dept. of Sociology, Social Work, and Criminology, and teaches gender studies courses in addition to social work. Before joining academia, she was a practicing social worker in child welfare and family preservation. Barb’s current area of scholarship is social work practice with the LGBTQ population. She and her partner of 22 years live in rural Wabash County, in an historic home that has been in Barb’s family for five generations.

This training session is an introduction to the knowledge and skills professional helpers need to serve LGBTQ youth effectively and ethically. Participants will explore terminology, challenge stereotypes and bias, identify developmental needs, and consider policy implications relevant to affirming practice with LGBTQ youth. Ample opportunities will be provided for discussion and Q&A.

To learn more about services for LQBTQ youth in our community, local service provider tables will be available from 12:00-12:30pm following the training session.
